Who are the people in our government and what is the work they do for all of us? Join us at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute to explore government at the local, state, and national levels, and think about the laws and decisions you would make for your community.
We will welcome girls and chaperones in the lobby.
Together we will go to one of our studio classroom where we will use slides and group discussion to talk about:
- Your School and Neighborhood
- Rules in Your Community
- City/Town Government and People
- State and Federal Government and People
- Representation and Qualities of Leadership
We will then move to our replica of the US Senate Chamber for an activity on How a Bill Becomes a Law. The girls will work together as lawmakers to try to pass a National Ice Cream Sundae Bill, as a way of learning about the process of making laws.
Finally we will visit our exhibit that features the office of Senator Ted Kennedy, talk more about roles in government and work with the girls on an art activity to illustrate their own lawmaker offices. Girls will have an opportunity to share about their office illustrations, including a key law they might work on for their community. Volunteer supervision required.
